Assistive Technologies
Individuals living with a disability use assistive technologies to enable and assist web browsing.
Screen reader software
Screen reader software will read out the content of a web page using synthesized speech. The software can read selected elements of what is being displayed on screen or everything that is happening on the computer. This software was designed to help blind and vision impaired users.
Braille terminals
Braille terminals have a refreshable braille display. This display renders text as braille characters. The text is displayed as braille by using raised pegs on a flat surface with a 'QWERTY' or braille keyboard.
Screen magnification software
Screen magnification software enlarges the display on a computer monitor. This makes it easier to read for visually impaired users.
Speech recognition software
Speech recognition software accepts spoken commands to the computer. It can turn dictation into grammatically correct text. This helps people who have difficulty using a mouse or a keyboard.
Keyboard overlays
Keyboard overlays are used by people who have motor control difficulties. The overlays make typing easier for users who require them.
